Common Palm Tree Diseases & Insects

Ganoderma Root

Infecting many different types of palms, Ganoderma Root is caused by a fungus. This palm tree disease will cause the palm’s fronds to wither and droop parallel to the trunk. New fronds may appear pale green or yellow in color, and the new growth will be stunted. Without proper treatment, this palm disease could cause the trunk to collapse and the head of the infected palm may fall off.

Leaf Spot Fungus

Younger palms and/or palm trees stressed by inadequate drainage are at a much higher risk for becoming infected by a leaf spot fungus than a healthy mature palm. The symptoms, as the name suggests, of the fungi are the development of spots on the palm fronds, or as some may refer to them palm leaves. These spots can vary in size and shape, and will range in color from yellow to brown or even black, depending on what type of fungus is infecting the palm tree.

Palm Leaf Scales

Palm leaf scales are tiny insects that feed on the palm tree’s fronds by inserting a straw like appendage into the frond to suck the nutrients out. Scales appear as small brown circular bumps on the palm tree fronds, or as some may call them palm tree leaves. Scales can be very challenging to kill and in large quantities very damaging to the palm.

Rugose Spiraling Whitefly

The Rugose Spiraling Whitefly is a large slow moving insect that is commonly found on palm trees. The Spiraling Whitefly excretes a white waxy substance called honeydew, coating the palm fronds. A black powdery substance, Sooty Mold will grow on the palm’s fronds feeding on the honeydew. If the Whitefly’s population is to increase greatly, the infested palm can become completely covered in the white waxy substance. This substance will often accumulate on pool decks, patio furniture, and cars from overhanging palms; which can be quite the nuisance. A Spiraling Whitefly infestation can cause decline, defoliation, and dieback of the palm tree.
