Common Palm Tree Deficiencies

Potassium Deficiency

Potassium deficiency is perhaps the most common and severe form of malnutrition found in palm trees. The symptoms will start in the older fronds, with translucent yellow to orange spots, you may even notice some black or necrotic (dead tissue) spotting. As the deficiency progresses the symptoms will spread to the newer fronds and the tips will begin to appear withered and burnt.

The results of untreated potassium deficiency in palm trees is often fatal. As such, palm trees require fertilizers that contain potassium that is either greater than or equal to the nitrogen levels found in the soil. Our arborist will take soil samples, to be tested in our lab, from the base of your palm tree to determine how much nitrogen and potassium is present in the soil. With this information, we will provide you with a custom fertilizer built to promote healthy growth in your palm.

Magnesium Deficiency

A Magnesium deficiency is common in a variety of palm trees. It is also the element needed for the green pigment in plant leaves and is required for photosynthesis. The most obvious symptoms include yellowing of the fronds and in certain palm species one might notice what would appear as dead edges around the fronds.

Manganese Deficiency

Although Manganese deficiency can occur in other palm species it is most commonly seen in Royal Palms, Queen Palms, Foxtail Palms, and Roebelenii Palm trees. The symptoms for Manganese deficiency include the stunting of new growth and a burnt or withered appearance along the edges of the fronds. This deficiency is most noticeable in the new growth.
